The Project
A small pneumatic waste collection system in the well-known historical harbour area Nyhavn collects waste from:
– 150 apartments
– 120 restaurants /bars /offices and small shops
– 1 theater, Skuespilshuset
Being a tourist hotspot all year around, it is essential to the image of the city that the quay and the streets are kept clean at all times.
Since 2012 the street litter (ice cream paper, candy bags etc) as well is taken care of with the help of self-emptying litterbins connected to the Envac system.
The system was first inaugurated in 1996. In 2005 the original waste collection terminal was moved to give room for the construction of a new Theater House, the Skuespilhus. The theater is also connected to the system.
The waste collection terminal was moved from street level to an underground bunker with an entrance door and staircase that folds in and out of the pavement. It takes up zero space when it is not being visited by for example maintenance staff or when the waste container is being shifted.
At the same time the waste inlets were upgraded to a new model and a brand new control system was installed.
During the summer, when this popular tourist spot is crowded 24/7, the system transports approx. 60 tonnes of waste per week without any vehicle having to drive into the crowds to get it out of the area.
The casing of the litter bins in Nyhavn is designed by Architecht Erik Brandt Dam, Denmark.
